Patrick L Young is an entrepreneur and a leading thinker on capital market structure. He has been professionally involved in financial markets for more than 20 years and has worked throughout the world.
Patrick has advised most of the world’s leading exchanges as well as a number of governments and investment banks, in relation to their development and strategy amongst a range of different issues.
Patrick is the author of several books including the acclaimed “Capital Market Revolution”, “New Capital Market Revolution” and “The Promiscuous Investor” – all of which have proven prescient in their analysis of developments in everything from fees through stock exchange structure via the rise of hedge funds to the use of technology in commerce.
Online, Patrick was the founder of erivatives.com which published online magazines online for more than a decade from the mid-1990s and was somewhat of a pioneer for specialist financial publishing on the Web.
A passionate innovator, he has been in the vanguard of introducing new products such as Single Stock Futures and creating exchanges for the trading of contracts on Sports and Entertainment (the so-called “prediction”) markets (he was a founder of the prediction exchange now better known as Intrade for instance).
He has in the past consulted to many leading exchanges throughout the world as well as many major banks/investment banks, fund managers and government organisations.
Patrick remains a sought after speaker at conferences throughout the world, having keynoted for audiences of up to 1000 people in countries as diverse as Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, UK and USA. He has also taught all manner of aspects of financial markets for exchanges such as LIFFE as well as on public courses and within many financial institutions. He has guest lectured at various schools and business schools including Insead and the International University of Monaco.
Patrick has considerable media experience through his various financial media ventures while also contributing regular columns to Global Custodian (“Dangerous Remedies”) and Trading Places (“The IPO Column”).
Patrick has been a regular guest host on CNBC Squawkbox Europe and a media commentator in leading financial journals and digital media. His Op Eds have appeared in newspapers across the globe, such as the AFR, L’Agefi, FT, NZZ and Wall Street Journal and he has broadcast on BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, ITV and Reuters as well as networks in Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Switzerland and the USA.
Formerly with Tullett & Tokyo and Daiwa Europe, prior to trading independently on and off the LIFFE floor, Patrick consults to leading banks, brokers and exchanges worldwide. He has experience as an expert witness and his lateral thinking has been much in demand, particularly for product development and strategic work. Young works with many investor groups such as private equity, hedge and mutual funds and is a “Leader” (i.e. in the top 5% of the 200,000 council member advisors) working with the Gerson Lehrman Group. Young also set up a Monaco office for a brokerage firm in 2006 and is working on similar projects for clients currently.
He has worked with various industry bodies and spent 5 years as a non-executive director of the Swiss Futures & Options Association.
Beyond the financial world, Patrick has been an active investor in emerging markets, particularly Eastern Europe. He has an interest in Serbia “The Danube Project” and a company in Poland “Projekt Vistula” which is involved in property and general trade. He has also been involved in film/television production and was formerly a specialist motoring/motorsporting photo-journalist.
